HAYWARD, Wis. — In the heart of Northwoods lumberjack country, timbersports isn't just a spectacle for tourists, it’s a grueling, high-adrenaline discipline where hundredths of a second separate a world champion from the rest of the pack. For Deven Blair, it’s also a way of life, a passion forged through personal adversity, grit, and a relentless drive to compete.

Some of you around town might know him simply as Deven Blair, the guy managing the local show or swinging through the gym, but from here on out, you officially have permission to address him as "World Champion." Blair earned the prestigious title right here at home in Hayward, Wisconsin, at the 2026 Lumberjack World Championships. Competing in the high-speed Boom Run, Blair captured the World Championship title with a blazing time of 12.39 seconds. What makes the feat even more remarkable is the context: the standing world record of 12.26 seconds was established back when competitors got a running start. Under the 2026 rules requiring a stationary start, Blair was a mere 0.13 seconds off that record, virtually redefining what’s humanly possible on a chain of spinning logs.

Today, Blair manages the renowned Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Hayward, directing operations and leading a tight-knit crew through an exhausting summer schedule. Performing roughly six shows a week Monday through Saturday—and keeping up the pace even on the doorsteps of major competitions—Blair lives and breathes the sport.

Beyond the boom run, Blair is a true multi-event athlete, routinely testing his limits across seven distinct disciplines: the 60-foot speed climb, 90-foot speed climb, boom run, log roll, underhand chop, double buck saw, and axe throw.

Born and raised in Winter, Wisconsin, Blair grew up with deep roots in the Northwoods. His father was a logger, and from an early age, Deven was surrounded by chainsaws, heavy equipment, and the steady rhythm of blue-collar forestry. Tragically, his father passed away in a logging accident, leading young Deven to step away from tree service for a time.

Growing up, Blair was a gifted multi-sport athlete, competing in football, baseball, and basketball. But during his freshman year of high school, a severe knee injury, tearing both his ACL and meniscus, derailed his traditional team sports path.

Yet, the competitive spark didn't fade. At age 15, Blair got a job with Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Hayward and realized he had found a new arena. Getting back on the logs gave him the rush he’d been missing since his injury.

"I've been chasing the adrenaline ever since," Blair says.

By 2021, at the age of 19, he entered the Lumberjack World Championships as a serious competitor, proving that his athletic career was far from over, it had simply changed venues.

While Blair calls Hayward home during the show season, his talents have taken him across the country. He has toured through Washington, Texas, Delaware, Georgia, West Virginia, Virginia, Michigan, Chicago, Minnesota, Missouri, and Tennessee (including a two-year stint performing with the Dolly Parton Stampede). In the off-season, he keeps his edge sharp by touring with the D.L Weatherhead Timberworks Lumberjack Show.

International opportunities continue to knock. Recently, Blair received an all-inclusive invitation to perform a speed-climbing exhibition for a major talent show in Italy. Down the road, his sights are set on the Stihl TIMBERSPORTS® Series—aiming to compete in national championships and ultimately qualify for world competitions abroad.

"I want to do this as long as I possibly can," Blair says.

To maintain elite performance, heavy weight training is non-negotiable. "Weight lifting is a crucial thing that is needed for timbersports," he notes, adding that he truly loves the discipline of the gym. Outdoors, when he isn't training or managing, you can find him fishing, hunting, snowboarding, or chilling with friends.

His career has also been bolstered by steady local backing. Ignite Dispensary has served as Blair's primary sponsor throughout his entire timbersports career, helping him purchase specialized gear, providing discounts, and helping fuel his path to a World Championship.

Blair’s athletic journey has come full circle. He served as the Head Coach for both the Winter High School varsity track team and the middle school track program, as well as the assistant boys varsity basketball coach for Winter.

The lessons he brings to young athletes are rooted in the unique realities of timbersports.

"Determination and self-discipline are huge aspects from timbersports that weren’t always taught in high school athletics," Blair reflects. "In timbersports, you have to carry your own water—it’s an individual sport. Learning that achievement builds confidence, learning how to develop self-confidence, and keeping up good energy as a performer—these are all aspects that directly benefit scholastic sports."

When asked what advice he offers to young people considering the sport, his message is clear: stay active, stay athletic, and don't be intimidated by the learning curve.

"There is a spot for everyone in some timbersport, and being athletic is a must," Blair says. "It helps to have some background in blue-collar skills—using a drill, swinging an axe, running a chainsaw—but everything is learnable. If you’re local, there are plenty of opportunities to learn."
