HAYWARD, Wis. — A mixture of explosive aerial strike-power and game-breaking defensive plays carried the Rhinelander Hodags past the Hayward/Lac Courte Oreilles Hurricanes 49-12 on Friday night, extending a troubling early-season trend for the home team.

Rhinelander’s passing attack delivered a clinic in execution. The Hodags completed a perfect 7-for-7 pass attempts on the night, racking up 203 yards through the air. Averaging a staggering 29.0 yards per completion, Rhinelander repeatedly stretched the Hurricanes' secondary, throwing for two touchdowns and posting a near-flawless 437.9 passer rating.

On the ground, Rhinelander remained sharp, rushing 21 times for 123 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and punching in three touchdowns.

Hayward/LCO attempted to dictate the tempo and mitigate its defensive struggles by keeping the ball on the ground. The Hurricanes logged 40 rushing attempts for 148 yards, highlighted by a home-run 48-yard touchdown run. Hayward/LCO also found fireworks through the air when a 73-yard touchdown strike capped a 9-for-15, 136-yard passing effort. However, consistent drives were difficult to sustain against an active Hodags defense.

The defining stretch of the game belonged to the Rhinelander defense, which directly compounded Hayward/LCO's point-deficit woes. While the Hurricanes compiled 40 total tackles (27 solo) and four tackles for loss, the Hodags countered with 67 total tackles and two massive takeaways.

Both of Rhinelander’s interceptions were returned all the way to the end zone, tallying 123 total return yards and putting 14 quick points on the board via defensive pick-sixes. Those non-offensive scores abruptly slammed the door on any momentum the Hurricanes tried to build.

Special teams and point-after execution further widened the margin. Rhinelander finished a perfect 7-for-7 on PAT kick attempts and consistently won the field position battle, averaging 33.0 yards per punt compared to Hayward/LCO’s 18.3 yards.

While Hayward/LCO showed flashes of big-play capability, closing a massive scoring gap will be the primary focus as the Hurricanes look to shore up their defense and ignite the offense heading into next week.

The loss drops Hayward/LCO to 0-2 as they continue to wrestle with a steep scoring deficit on both sides of the ball. Through two weeks, the Hurricanes' defense has surrendered 49 and 42 points in back-to-back outings, while an offense averaging just 13 points per game has struggled to match that pace. Erasing that 32.5-point average margin will be the team's top priority as they head into the heart of their conference schedule.

Hayward/LCO will look to get back on track at home when they host Spooner on Friday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hayward High School's Rod Lundberg Field.
